Edison Staff
Edison has 26 classroom teachers and a principal. In addition to the teachers there are a number of other staff members including a music teacher, speech therapists, reading specialists, early education interventionists and paraeducators.
The Torrance Unified School District has implemented class size reduciton in all kindergarten through third grade classes. Reducing the class size and hiring additional qualified teachers has resulted in steady improvement in SAT-9 scores over the last three years. Grades four and five average 30 students per classroom.
All teachers at Edison are assigned to teach within their credentialed area. Teachers are evaluated by the school principal on a regular basis. Part-time personnel assigned to serve Edison students are an Adaptive Physical Education teacher, an instrumental music teacher, a health assistant, a psychologist, an English Language Development (ELD) program specialist, a speech/language specialist, three Reading Recovery teachers, and a part-time vocal music teacher. We have a full-time resource specialist and part-time instructional assistants who help teachers in the classrooms. They also help ELL, special education, and Title 1 students.

Edison Instructional Program
The overall quality of instruction at Edison Elementary is excellent. Edison School recently participated in a Program Quality Review (PQR). Edison's leadership team, with the support of all teachers and School Site Council (SSC), will implement the PQR plan in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Edison's School Improvement Plan is updated annually. This plan is used to describe the instruction at Edison and to set goals for change and improvement. The plan is monitored by the School Site Council and used as a school wide guide for developing and implementing programs.
Edison's Discipline and Climate
Students enjoy a positive climate for learning. Listed below are some ways in which this is achieved:- Assemblies are held most mornings in the "quad" with awards given for citizenship, scholarship, and special effort.
- Students from several upper-grade class4s choose to become "buddies" to primary students. These shared activities help build self-esteem in both older and younger children.
- Numerous students assist as cafeteria helpers, office helpers, messengers, and tutors. Such activities help all students develop leadership skills.
- Selected fifth-grade students participate in a Conflict Manager Program. They receive training and are responsible for mediating some student problems.
Kindergarten 20-40 minutes per week
Grades 1-3 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours per week
Grades 4-5 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours per week
Emergency drills are routinely held for earthquake, fire, and shelter-in-place. Each classroom is equipped with individual survival kits. Additional emergency equipment has been provided by the PTA.
